Understanding major themes and identifying how they are reflected in character and plot
is an essential skill for literary analysis. The states of order and chaos play important roles
throughout Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Students will use this worksheet to
examine the text in terms of order and chaos, summarize how the plot’s key action roughly
falls into these two major categories, and ultimately determine who or what is the cause of
the order and chaos in the play. Pass out this worksheet before students begin reading the
play and have them return to it after they read each act.
