While several characters crave some sort of revenge in Hamlet, Fortinbras is the only
character who is truly successful in his attempt to take revenge on Denmark. His story
also contains important comparisons with that of Hamlet. Students will use this worksheet
to trace instances in the text where Fortinbras appears and compare Fortinbras’s and
Hamlet’s motivations. Ultimately upon completion, students should be able to recognize
Hamlet and Fortinbras as foil characters. Hamlet’s inability to act and ultimate failure are
contrasted by Fortinbras’s actions and ultimate success. Pass out the worksheet after
students have finished reading Hamlet.
