Hamlet’s famous “To be, or not to be” soliloquy represents the central conflict of the
play and demonstrates Hamlet’s inability to take any kind of decisive action toward
accomplishing his goal. Students will use this worksheet to first identify the poetic
and literary elements in the speech and then connect those elements to the thematic
expressions revealed about Hamlet’s anxieties and inner conflict. Pass out the worksheet
after students have finished reading Act 3, scene 1.
