Producing an analytical summary of a text is an excellent way to deepen and clarify one’s
understanding of the plot, characters, and themes. Students will use this worksheet to
learn how to write an analytical summary of a scene from Hamlet by using analytical verbs,
precise nouns, and descriptive adverbs and adjectives. First, students will summarize a
section of text, and then they will color-code their summaries, identifying the grammatical
elements used. Pass out this worksheet at any point while reading. Review the instructions
as a class before students begin working. Pass out and review the sample student response
to give students a clearer idea of the task.
