While most students have heard of the Great Depression, many may not be familiar with other important historical and cultural changes happening in the U.S. during the era in which The Great Gatsby is set. This handout gives students important background information about the economy after World War I, the effects of prohibition, the new emphasis on consumerism, and the events leading up to the Great Depression.  Use this handout to spark discussion and debate in your classroom and allow students to express personal experiences related to the issues described.
